How come Ethiopia and Liberia were never colonised?

Liberia was founded in the early 19th century by freed African-American slaves and free people of color who resettled from the United States. The country's founding was supported by the American Colonization Society, which sought to establish a colony where freed slaves could live free from racial discrimination. Liberia declared its independence in 1847 and managed to maintain its sovereignty throughout the colonial period.
Ethiopia had a long history of centralized government and strong leadership. Leaders such as Emperor Menelik II successfully modernized the Ethiopian military and resisted European attempts at colonization. The decisive Ethiopian victory over Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 further solidified Ethiopia's independence and served as a symbol of African resistance to colonialism.
