At this point what food actually is British. Fish and Chips is a staple in British culture every now and then I go down to the chippys on Friday and get some fish and chips cause it’s British tradition write. Yh you man are in for a shock.

Fish and chips was introduced by Jewish immigrants from Spain and Portugal.

In 1496, Portuguese King Manuel I married Isabella of Spain, who opposed religious freedom. She demanded the expulsion of all Jews from Portugal. In response, Manuel I ordered that all Jews either convert to Christianity or leave the country.

On the Jewish Sabbath, cooking is prohibited, so Sephardic Jewish families prepared food on Friday afternoon to last through the Sabbath. One popular dish was fried white fish, often cod or haddock, coated in flour or matzo meal batter. This preserved the fish, allowing it to be eaten cold the next day without losing much flavor. The dish became popular, and Jewish immigrants in England began selling fried fish in the streets from trays hung from their necks, creating a tradition that would evolve into the iconic British dish of fish and chips.
