Why's Brazil so fucking big?

If you’ve ever see Brazil you’ll notice how massive it is. In fact it’s the biggest country in South America , but why exactly is this.

Well to be honest it’s a combination of geopolitical and historical factors.

Covering over 8.5 million square kilometers (3.2 million square miles), Brazil stands as the fifth largest country globally in terms of land area.

The story of Brazil's expansion begins with the arrival of Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century. In 1500, the Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral claimed the territory for Portugal, initiating the colonial era. Initially focused on coastal exploration and trade, Portuguese settlers gradually pushed inland, establishing settlements and exploiting the region's resources.

The Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494, negotiated between Portugal and Spain, divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between the two colonial powers. This treaty allocated the eastern portion of South America, including present-day Brazil, to Portugal. As a result, Brazil became a Portuguese colony, and Portuguese colonization efforts intensified.

Throughout the colonial period, Portugal expanded its control over the territory through a combination of exploration, conquest, and colonization. Portuguese settlers established sugar plantations along the coast, which fueled demand for labor, leading to the importation of enslaved Africans. The discovery of gold and other valuable resources further incentivized Portuguese expansion into the interior regions of Brazil.

By the late 18th century, Portugal had established firm control over most of present-day Brazil, with its borders extending far inland. The discovery of gold in the interior regions, particularly in the state of Minas Gerais, spurred further territorial expansion as settlers migrated in search of wealth.

The early 19th century brought significant changes to Brazil's territorial landscape with the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. The Portuguese royal family, fleeing Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, established the seat of the Portuguese Empire in Rio de Janeiro in 1808. This move facilitated administrative reforms and economic development in Brazil, contributing to its territorial expansion.

Brazil's territorial expansion was not solely driven by colonial ambitions but also by strategic considerations and geopolitical dynamics. The acquisition of territories such as the Amazon basin and the region of Mato Grosso served to secure Brazil's borders and assert its dominance over the South American continent.
